I am thrilledto be among the Asian American Pacific Islanderartists on display at the White House. My illustration,Champions of Change will be on view for the month of May. They asked me to write a bit about the piece, and this is what is printed beside it. “When I was honored as a White House Champion of Change in 2012, I thought about the ultimate champions – President Obama and the First Lady. They inspire me not only with their steadfast commitment to change, but also (and perhaps more importantly) with their love for each other and this country. As I thought of them, I imagined them climbing a giant tree with champagne and music and sharing a dance.” – Nidhi Chanani
I will be in Los Angeles this weekend for Wondercon with my friend and talented jewelry maker Faheema of Unicorn Crafts.
A week later I will return to Seattle for the fourth year exhibiting atEmerald City Comiconwith my friend and talented sculptor, Lyla of Little Brigade.I love Seattle and even though it’s very touristy, I love Pike’s market.
If you’re in Los Angeles or Seattle I hope to see you! I will have a limited number of live drawing slots available each day, so if you’d like to get a customsketch by me, come by with a photo! ^_^
Have a wonderful week!
we went on our first family vacation. it was equal parts rough and relaxing. traveling with baby was fine, but being hotel bound while baby napped with beautiful hawaii right outside the door was hard! i made the best of nap time by drawing (in the dark!) and even though we didn’t spend enough time in the pool or the ocean, it was hard to leave!
My publisher, First Second, is celebrating 10 years of making books. I first encountered them as an attendee at San Diego Comic-Con in 2009. I remember finding Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese, and how deeply it impacted me. It shifted my ideas of what comics could be. I’ve picked up a few of First Second’s books every year since, as a fellow exhibitor in San Diego.I created this comic to illustrate how I see myself in each of their titles – and it was hard to narrow it down! I didn’t get to include This One Summer, Three Shadows, Same Difference, Battling Boy, Sailor Twain, Sumo, The Undertaking of Lily Chen…agh! I love them all!As I wrote my forthcoming graphic novel, Pashmina, I had First Second on my mind. Their titles are diverse and literary. When my agent asked me about pitching, I told her that if First Second bought my book, I would be ecstatic… and I still am!Thank you and congrats, First Second, for 10 years of publishing wonderful books. I am so happy to be part of your family of authors!#10yearsof01
My friend Angela and I were talking about the busyness of parent life. As she was talking, she had the epiphany that we spend most our day saying NO to ourselves: no sleeping in, no time for a run, no time to shower, no time to read a novel… but when it comes to snacks and treats its an easy way we can say YES. It may not be the healthiest but we embrace these small moments where we can allow ourselves pleasure.
So last week the hubbahubba and I relished our two hours before bed, when baby was asleep, and we baked.
I granted permission to the Brightside to minimally animate my illustrations – it turned out beautifully! Happy Valentine’s day!
The hubbahubba was looking through my files and came across this custom illustrationfrom 2014 and he exclaimed “Hey, I’ve never seen this!” I forgot to share it soI am sharing it now ^_^ This couple wereengaged under a very unique treeand they wanted me to capture it. As with all commissions, I felt honored to work on something so meaningful.

I participated for the first time in hourly comics yesterday. It’s an annual event where anyone can share a comic snapshot of their life. The goal is to draw a comic every hour! It was fun and challenging. I started the day off taking care of our daughter so that Nick could take a phone interview and ended in San Francisco with artists friends in our sketch group. I posted them “live” as I went along on social media and this morning I scanned them all to share with you!
Have a lovely Tuesday!
