SF etsy (my last retail show)
This weekend I will be at the SF Etsy show in San Francisco. I’m proud to be a member of the SF Etsy family and I hope you’ll come and shop the 200 local artists and makers.
Art and craft shows taught me how to price my work, display it and cope with slow sales, no sales and sometimes (but not often, thankfully) harsh feedback. Mostly though, it gave me what I’m always searching for – family. I’m excited about this show because I’m approaching my 10th year as an independent artist and things are shifting in my career. Books are taking up more and more of my time.
I will continue book related events next year but this may be my last retail show for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile I’m close to complete on the final art for my upcoming picture book, written by Bea Birdsong, I WILL BE FIERCE. After which I will roll right into finishing artwork for my first bilingual board book, Shubh Raatri Dost! Sometime after that I hope to create some new illustrations to share here.

We are surrounded by beauty; art has the power to showcase that. Art has an impact that’s immeasurable. Art is for everyone. Of course, artists need to earn and live a comfortable (not starving) life. However, I believe that everyone should be able to enjoy what we create.
I built my career by selling my personal work. I support myself almost entirely from work I want to do  versus work I am paid to do. This has liberated me to pursue what I truly love. As I explore my artistic freedom I think about access to art within our culture. Although my work is widely available digitally (facebook, blog, twitter, tumblr, instagram) only the people who can afford art can have it in their home. I want to challenge this idea of accessibility. I believe everyone should have something that makes them happy.
We piloted this sale last year and were surprised and humbled by the results. As long as our team can handle the demand we want to continue this annually.
