I participated for the first time in hourly comics yesterday. It’s an annual event where anyone can share a comic snapshot of their life. The goal is to draw a comic every hour! It was fun and challenging. I started the day off taking care of our daughter so that Nick could take a phone interview and ended in San Francisco with artists friends in our sketch group. I posted them “live” as I went along on social media and this morning I scanned them all to share with you!
Have a lovely Tuesday!
This year my art goal is more comics! In between nap time, bath time, play time, cooking and working on PashminaI’ve been drawing some comics in my sketch book. ^_^
I am in this month’sGood Housekeeping magazine. In the almost 6 years I’ve been working as a full-time artist I’ve never been in print. I have been rejected countless times by blogs, magazines, stores, etc. At first it would really hurt. After awhile I got used to the rejection and took it as par for the course, because it is. My work isn’t the right fit for every store, every blog or every magazine. In fact my work has the funniest (to me) accusations of being: too colorful, too whimsical, too kid-friendly. I’ve worked hard to develop my own style (and I’m still learning every day) and I won’t change who I am or my work to fit into someone else’s idea of art. After years creating original art (not fan art), learning how to make a living creating art that represents the underrepresented, failing, late night marketingemails, doubting myself CONSTANTLY, attending workshops, reading books on artistic process, approaching shops in person to carry my prints, being rejected, working, working working… yesterdayI walked into a bookstore and picked up a NATIONAL magazine with my work inside. I cannot put into words how this makes me feel. If you’re around a newsstand, please check it out ^_^I hope you have a lovely weekend ^_^
I don’t usually do two versions of the same illustration – but I really wanted to do this one!
Remembering MLK today, I share his words “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

I recently did a set of commissions and loved how thehubby described their cooking sessions – he made the food while she snatched samples along the way! Ive been asked about my process for awhile so I thought I would create a short gif to give some insight. I begin in flash with a line drawing, then I draw over that with solid color. I export my flash file in layers to photoshop and add shadows, lighting and adjust the colors.I hope you have a happy week!
