We are surrounded by beauty; art has the power to showcase that. Art has an impact that’s immeasurable. Art is for everyone. Of course, artists need to earn and live a comfortable (not starving) life. However, I believe that everyone should be able to enjoy what we create.

 

I built my career by selling my personal work. I support myself almost entirely from work I want to do – versus work I am paid to do. This has liberated me to pursue what I truly love. As I explore my artistic freedom I think about access to art within our culture. Although my work is widely available digitally (facebook, blog, twitter, tumblr, instagram) only the people who can afford art can have it in their home. I want to challenge this idea of accessibility. I believe everyone should have something that makes them happy.

We piloted this sale last year and were surprised and humbled by the results. As long as our team can handle the demand we want to continue this annually.

When my cousin called to ask me to draw something for her wedding save the date, I was surprised. My family has been very supportive of my career, but being asked to create art for them was a first. As she talked about her fiancé this image immediately popped into my head. I’m honored that I could be part of their special day in this way. ^_^

Meanwhile, the rough sketches for Misty were approved last week. I am now working on the color versions and will be balancing that and thumbnails for Pashmina. Therefore it might be a bit before I post again, but for good reason!

I’m having a great big spring sale of small original work. This Saturday I will have 6 small watercolors, 3 framed watercolors, a few mini wood burnings, a bunch of post-its and two painted dolls available. Meanwhile, I have reduced the prices on all my large wood burnings already.

Recently, I watched Amanda Palmer from the Dresden Dolls give a TED talk and I was deeply inspired. I love how musicians have made their music accessible by simply asking their listeners to give. I want to apply the principles that have worked in the music business to my own work. Prints are a physical item therefore the costs are different than a digital download (I will not offer my art as a digital download).
