We will be fierce

I feel the message of this book now more than ever. My good friend from college, Joe Sampson, is a principal at a bay area elementary school.  Joe posted a video reading I will be fierce and it’s wonderful. It’s great for kids everywhere and honestly, adults too. In addition to the video, I also shared a story time kit to accompany I will be fierce here. It’s been absolutely wonderful to see the educators, librarians and authors come together to support parents who are homeschooling their children.

We also watched his I am not scared video and it brought us comfort.

We’re exploring many new iterations of homeschooling as we adjust to our life, school and work expectations. We’re motivating our kid to get up and ready by using a reward chart. It’s hard when there’s no school to attend. I’m sharing my reward chart here as well.

Things that are working – sidewalk chalk to create alphabet hopscotch and use it to spell words, educational and promotes movement. Nick set up a tent inside our living room for a faux camping movie night. This weekend we plan to hold our first family band practice. We’re also going to set up our dining room as a restaurant (decor, menu, bill!) and give our kid the experience of eating out… in our home.

Every time I read the news my heart sinks… but these small moments of creativity and connection are helping.

Wishing you a safe and restful weekend.

grandma day

grandma today is my mother-in-law’s birthday. she’s an incredible person. she gives everyone the benefit of the doubt – even if they’re obviously wrong. i’ve learned so much by observing who she is, how she accepts people and her positive attitude. being part of her family feels like a gift. she’s aretired pre-school teacher.she has hundreds of songs memorized, knowledge about great books and activities to do with children and an open, loving heart. when our baby spends time with her we joke that it’s pre pre-school. i’m so happy that her influence is all around. happy birthday, grandma! <3

I don’t usually do two versions of the same illustration – but I really wanted to do this one!

Remembering MLK today, I share his words “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Have a great week!
