Peninsula Comics Fest

This illustration, Library, is from 2011 when I was trying to figure out how to make a living from art while working part-time at the Menlo Park Library. It was the only job I was sad to leave. It reminded me daily how much I loved books and people of the book. It was also an important support as I ventured onto an unknown path. Even now, I still think of Menlo Park as my home library.

That’s why I’m very happy to participate in the 2020 Peninsula Comics Arts Fest! Returning to my home library as an author is a lovely gift. I am grateful for the home I found there and the support they still provide for authors and cartoonists.

I will be part of two events (but please check their full schedule, there are amazing folks coming through and wonderful workshops through the whole month!)

Saturday March 7

12 PM

Redwood City Library (downtown)

I will be presenting about my path to comics and the process of making comics

(Ryan North will be presenting at 1pm and the whole day will be packed with fun)

Monday March 9

6:30 PM

Menlo Park Library

Comic Artist Panel (moderating)

I hope to see you there!

Look what I found

Honestly, seeing this feels wonderfully surreal. I hope it always does. This is a placeholder on Netflix for the adaptation of PASHMINA into a full length animated musical with Gurinder Chadha set to direct. More info TBA.

It’s been a year. Many challenges along with reasons to be grateful… for my work, the hubbahubba, the kid and for your support.
Thank you ❤

seattle tomorrow!

I will be speaking and signing books in Seattle tomorrow at Third Place Books in Seward Park. I hope to see you there!

Also I’ll be back at Disney this weekend for more live watercoloring and the release of my new Disney piece! If you’re interested in the original of my first watercolor of Baby Dory or the new Disney print please contact WonderGround Gallery. They can take orders via email at merchandise.guest.services@disneyparks.com or by telephone at 877-560-6477.  Just let Mail Order know that they are interested in the Nidhi Chanani artwork from WonderGround Gallery West and they would be happy to let them know if it’s currently available.

Hope to see you in Seattle or Anaheim!

Bay Area, St Louis, New York in May!

I will be in MANY places in May. The upside of work travel is meeting teachers, librarians and kids on the road. Those connections are heart warming and necessary. I keep those as fuel for the times I want to give up. The downside of travel, of course, is time away from my family and book deadlines. I’ve been inkng away on Jukebox, my next graphic novel, and reached the joyful part of the process where drawing pages becomes easier and more exciting. My main characters, Shahi and Naz, become more real every day.

The hardest part of this set of travel is that I will be away on Mother’s Day. That’s the reality of loving my job and my family, though.

My events kick off this weekend at the Bay Area Book Festival – I will be participating in an illustrator duel and story time. Then I head to St Louis for two events at their libraries (my first time there!), New York for PEN America’s World Voices event, back to the bay with a comics demo at the Apple Store in San Francisco’s Union Square, Turn the Page event at Fairyland in Oakland and end the month at my alma matter, UCSC, providing a heritage month keynote presentation. You can find all the details here.

I look forward to every event and I hope to see you on the road!

japan travel thoughts and LA Times festival of books

I’ve dreamt of traveling to Japan most of my life.

Traveling for us is a huge undertaking financially, emotionally and physically. I am grateful for every trip we’ve managed and Japan was a dream come true. The culture and art has influenced my work and life so deeply. Between Tokyo, Kyoto and jet lag, it was a whirlwind. I only had a few moments to draw which I’ve included below. My schedule for the rest of the year is packed between work and travel… I hope in the fall I’ll be able to create more art inspired by our trip. I have so many ideas!

Meanwhile, I was interviewed on the Children’s book podcast about my bilingual board book, Shubh Raatri Dost/Good Night Friend. It’s my favorite interview of the year, if you have a moment check it out. Also, Matthew is hosting a giveaway for the book on his instagram.

Lastly, if you’re in the LA area this Saturday, please come by the LA Times Festival of Books. I will be there with copies of Pashmina, Shubh Raatri Dost and advance copies of I will be fierce for sale!!

That’s all from me now! I hope to see you at one of my upcoming events.

SF public library Thursday!

I’m working away on things I can’t share yet – but here’s a sneak peek!

I will be presenting about my path to art and comics at the San Francisco Public Library, Noe Valley branch this Thursday from 4-5pm as part of their women’s history month events. I hope to see you there!

Have a great week!

Pashmina and Netflix

I’m overjoyed to share this announcement with you that my debut graphic novel PASHMINA will be adapted into an animated musical with Netflix. Gurinder Chadha and Ashok Amritraj are wonderful and I’m honored to have them take my work to new places.

I’m a bit overwhelmed with the good news! Thank you to everyone involved, especially my husband Nick, my editor Mark Siegel and the entire team at First Second/Macmillan and my rockstar agent who years ago helped me believe in myself, Judy Hansen. And of course all the folks who supported PASHMINA since it’s release.

I hope you have a lovely week!

NYCC & canvases

We’ve found a new vendor for canvases and dropped the price by 20%! Buying lovely, large canvases for your home is much more accessible and we’re thrilled.

I will be heading to New York next week for New York Comicon. I’m excited to share my schedule!

I hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend –

love in the leaves

I had the privilege of creating this custom illustration for a lovely couple who will marry this fall. I’ve been buried under deadlines and at times unsatisfying work. Drawing this reminded me why I love my job.

Next week I will be at Denver Comicon as their special guest, I will participate on a slew of panels as well as have an artist alley table and I’m excited to share that my office manager, Nickole, will have her original art there as well! I will kick of the weekend with a presentation at the Denver public library on Thursday. If you’re around the area, I’d love to see you!

I hope you have a great week!

disneyland in july!

I’m excited to share that I will be at Disneyland a few times in July! Catch me at Wonderground Gallery where they will release 2 new Disney prints, Disney California Adventure where I will perform live wood burning demonstrations or on July 21st for the Pixar Artist Showcase. My artwork will be featured at both Wonderground Gallery and Rushin’ River Outfitters in California Adventure for the month of July.

Meanwhile I will be presenting about PASHMINA and doing a mini presentation tomorrow the Turn the Page event at Fairyland in Oakland with a whole lot of amazing children’s book authors.

Whew! That’s a lot of events – hope to catch you at one!
