It feels like every day there’s a new layer of crap to cope with – right now California is ablaze with wildfires and our air quality is terrible. We can’t go outside. Meanwhile, inside our home the smoke has permeated making our throats and eyes sore.

I’m working on a lot of art that I can’t share yet, and thankfully it’s keeping me optimistic. I hope you’re finding ways to add some hope into your days.

Binny’s Diwali pre-order

I’m excited to share that I’ve partnered with one of my favorite local bookshops, Bel and Bunna, to exclusively offer signed copies and a free gift for pre-orders of my next picture book, Binny’s Diwali, written by Thrity Umrigar. All pre-orders will receive a signed copy and one 8×10 print (you cannot request specific prints). BUT if you pre-order 2 copies, you will receive each print (pictured below).

It’s a strange time to release a book, to say the least. When I was working on the illustrations for Binny’s Diwali, I had a note to myself that read “make this the best Diwali book ever!” It’s no secret that it’s my favorite holiday. I love Binny’s Diwali for many reasons – namely that it invites all readers, whether familiar or unfamiliar with the holiday, into the life of Binny and a celebration she wants to share. Diwali centers around banishing darkness and ushering in light, which is definitely needed this year.

I completely understand if buying books isn’t possible right now. But if you can share or boost in any way, I’m grateful. I’m offering the prints as an extra gift because I know we could all use some Diwali light.

Limited edition re-releases

I’m rereleasing a small batch of these limited edition prints that I created years ago for different relief efforts, Maya and Kapatid. The proceeds will go to the Equal Justice Initiative. These images will no longer be available for purchase after they have sold out!

I’ve added this print to the shop and today is the last day of my shop sale for cards or magnets for $2 (no coupon required).

Meanwhile, yesterday I finished coloring my next graphic novel, Jukebox.

I had the story idea in 2014. I pitched and sold it in 2017. I began inking in January 2019. It took 1.5 years to draw and color. It’s 210 pages in full color. Making a graphic novel is an intense and lonely process. I fell in love with my main characters, Shaheen and Tannaz. Two brown girls on a time traveling adventure. I felt their confusion, pain and joy. While working on Jukebox, it’s like living with them. And today, I feel relieved, tired, proud and honestly, sad. My sadness is tempered because I know I’ll meet them anew when readers discover their story next year.

For now, I am going to take a short break before diving back into more book making.
