sf zine fest

The San Francisco Zine Fest is this Sunday. As the guest of honor (!!) I was invited to create the poster and the limited edition tee. I’m super happy with the tee and can’t wait to grab one!

I will also be doing a live reading at the San Francisco Public Library tonight in partnership with the zinefest.

I hope to see you either tonight or Sunday in the city!

Have a lovely week.

sf zinefest

I was thrilled to be asked to be the guest of honor for this year’s SF Zinefest. I designed the poster and tee and will have a table there along with amazing zine, comic and art makers. I hope to see you on September 2nd!

And my statement about the poster:

“In this design I wanted to capture my love for San Francisco and its inspirational qualities. The city is home, it’s where I’ve dreamt, written and created. I love the way a piece of art can convey two extremes. The cool outside and warm inside. For me the city is one of contrasts – alive yet steady, foggy and bright, vivid and subdued. From the first time I came to San Francisco, which was for a zine fest, until now, it never ceases to amaze me.”

surprised

When I did the art for good challenge, many people sent ideas. My friend Briana, who owned Urban Bazaar in San Francisco (which was the first shop to carry my prints) asked me to draw a protester. She’s one of my favorite people, dedicated to good and a model for how to be intentional with your choices. When I got her request I decided to surprise her and drew her and her daughters protesting.

In turn, she surprised me by sharing her newest tattoo (!!!)

It’s my honor to do what I do and be surrounded by people like Briana. She lives far away now, but I’m so happy the distance hasn’t reduced our closeness – and this makes me feel even closer to her.

I hope you have a lovely day!

disney weekend

Catch me for my last Disney appearance this Saturday and Sunday. Both days I will be at Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disney from 11-1p and Rushing River in California Adventure from 2-4 performing live wood burnings. I hope to see you there!

Our first family ride

Two new illustrations were released this weekend with Disney. Both were inspired by my daughter – her first ride and her love of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. I think of the Small World ride as my family’s first experience with representation. We immigrated in the 80s to Southern California and inside Disneyland we found ourselves reflected in these adorable dolls from India. Each time we went on the ride I would watch my mom point and happily sing along, feeling in that moment that we were welcome. I can only hope that the message and beauty of that idea will prevail. Small world will always have a special place in my heart because of that experience with my mom. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to create this piece. Drawing the dolls in front of the clock was my absolute favorite part!

If you are in Downtown Disney, you can find this piece in the Wonderground Gallery. I will be there signing on July 21, 28 and 29 from 11-1pm. I will also be performing live wood burnings the last weekend at Rushin’ River Outfitters inside California Adventure. This past weekend I created owls and a lynx, both original, one of a kind and available there for $125.

If you can’t make it to Disney can take orders via email at: merchandise.guest.services@disneyparks.com  or by telephone at: 877-560-6477.  Just let Mail Order know that you’re interested in the Nidhi Chanani artwork from WonderGround Gallery West and they would be happy to let you know if it’s currently available. Please be patient as they do take a bit to reply.

I hope you have a good week!

thank you

Thank you for your ideas, messages and support. There are still drawings available here. For awhile I thought I was bananas for committing to 100 drawings as my hands began to ache and I fought a headache all day. Your love pushed me through.

We’ve raised $3,600 thus far. Thank you for committing your support to help immigrant families.

Art matters, it’s light in the darkness.

Keep fighting, keep resisting.

drawing all day!

I’m drawing all day to raise money and fight the inhumane treatment of immigrants.

This will be my only update because I have A LOT of drawing to do in order to hit 100. I’ll probably draw all night – if you want to follow along on twitter or instagram stories, that’s where I update regularly. Folks have already supported and I thank you. You can find all the available drawings as they’re made here.

Keep fighting, keep resisting.

art for good 100 drawing challenge

I could let the ocean of bad news swallow me whole. My toes, ankles and knees are submerged. I keep my body up and dry with art. Art is my raft and although it cannot save me from everything, it gives me hope. As more human rights are stripped away by a callous government I am desperate for hope.
Tomorrow, June 28th, I will attempt to create 100 original drawings in a day to raise money for charity similar to the ink drawings above, made in 2016. I am placing my work obligations on hold because resisting and connecting is far more important. Each drawing will be available for sale and every dollar of the sale (less shipping) will be donated here. In order to do this I set a few parameters – each drawing will be in black ink with gold and red embellishments. Each will have a character plus something (animal, object, etc). They will not be named but numbered. Each drawing will be posted immediately, with the help of my office manager Nickole, here.
Lastly, I will take suggestions. Email, tweet or comment and I will do my best to create based on your suggestions. I will need your help. I will post process, WIPs, and perhaps even some live videos on instagram.
I need to create art. I need to build a raft of hope with you.
Let’s fight the good fight together.

music makers + action

I wanted to finish this before Father’s Day but I didn’t have the time. I couldn’t celebrate with my family because I was in Denver for their Comic-con. While I was there the news of the administration taking a zero tolerance stance on immigration filled my news feed. Photos of children kept in cages and separate from their parents. I wanted to tune out, numb myself and disengage.

In the the last 10 years I built my art career and generally feel proud of my accomplishments. As the news of this horrific practice released I began to regret my life choices. Why didn’t I become a lawyer, doctor, advocate? I have no skills to help in these situations. I asked myself, what can I do to combat these atrocities?

I can draw. I can create and I can use that skill to raise money and awareness. My voice is small but I will not remain silent. I will not sit idly by as babies are ripped from their mothers. Mothers whose only crime is to seek asylum from trauma in their home countries.

Today I will run an auction on twitter of rare pieces of art (Disney art, variant cover comics and art collections) I will begin posting at 1pm and close each auction at the end of the hour. All money will be donated here. Next week I will create ink drawings and sell them to raise money. I will continue to find ways to help.

Please consider donating. Or signing up to provide support here. Or calling your reps. We have to fight for justice. Together.

love in the leaves

I had the privilege of creating this custom illustration for a lovely couple who will marry this fall. I’ve been buried under deadlines and at times unsatisfying work. Drawing this reminded me why I love my job.

Next week I will be at Denver Comicon as their special guest, I will participate on a slew of panels as well as have an artist alley table and I’m excited to share that my office manager, Nickole, will have her original art there as well! I will kick of the weekend with a presentation at the Denver public library on Thursday. If you’re around the area, I’d love to see you!

I hope you have a great week!
