Happy new year

Happy new year. I drew this last year, inspired by our Madam Vice President and felt it was appropriate to post again. I feel a sense of relief and hope that I haven’t in a long while.

2020 had many heartbreaks and challenges. In the midst of it, I completed three books (Kong & Me, Jukebox and What Will My Story Be?). I’m proud and very tired. This year I’m working on very exciting, unannounced books. Each story presents its own unique hurdle and joy. Although I have many things I cannot share, I’m happy to share that I’m part of a speaking agency, The Author Village. I can be booked for virtual visits through my page on their site. I’m grateful for work that allows me to connect with kids and their adults through story and art.

I hope to share more about my upcoming projects soon.

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy your week and stay safe.

I love this movie!

Also, I did not make a calendar this year and most likely won’t make one again. I have too many book deadlines keeping me busy! Thank you for your support and although there aren’t calendars, there are still prints, mugs, pillows and original paintings available.

Thanks!

What I can be

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a personal illustration. Inspired by our new Vice President, Kamala Harris, I couldn’t get this illustration out of my mind until I drew it.

I hope you have an inspired week.

earth baby originals

Art helps me focus and still brings bits of joy. I’m grateful that I can continue to create art in these uncertain times. I am fighting every day to remain afloat and art has helped. Walking and time in nature is a reminder that there’s still beauty around us. I love painting original work in the fall. This year I decided to free myself and follow the flow. It led to nature and this series of mini paintings, my earth babies.

Previously I released originals on instagram or via my mailing list. This year, I will time the releases in my shop, Friday at 12noon PST.

Tomorrow I will release six. They measure 2.5×3.5, framed, and priced $125.

Thank you for your support. Sending love and strength.

Limited edition re-releases

I’m rereleasing a small batch of these limited edition prints that I created years ago for different relief efforts, Maya and Kapatid. The proceeds will go to the Equal Justice Initiative. These images will no longer be available for purchase after they have sold out!

Thank you for your support and I hope you have a restful weekend.

tantrum trust exercise

Most of the time our kid is rainbows and curiosity but often (okay, daily) there are… moments. We love her through it but whew! They can be pretty intense.

I hope you’re all well.

woman’s best friend

I’ve added this print to the shop and today is the last day of my shop sale for cards or magnets for $2 (no coupon required).

Meanwhile, yesterday I finished coloring my next graphic novel, Jukebox.

I had the story idea in 2014. I pitched and sold it in 2017. I began inking in January 2019. It took 1.5 years to draw and color. It’s 210 pages in full color. Making a graphic novel is an intense and lonely process. I fell in love with my main characters, Shaheen and Tannaz. Two brown girls on a time traveling adventure. I felt their confusion, pain and joy. While working on Jukebox, it’s like living with them. And today, I feel relieved, tired, proud and honestly, sad. My sadness is tempered because I know I’ll meet them anew when readers discover their story next year.

For now, I am going to take a short break before diving back into more book making.

I hope you have a lovely week.

I am listening. I am processing and thinking of ways I can help. Donating, calling, amplifying and making art.

I will never allow hate and fear to stop me. I will keep creating and sharing love. I will never stop resisting in my words, paintings and acts of kindness.

Keep creating, stay committed, stay fierce!
