Forward

I’ve spent the past few years making books. My calendar is full of book deadlines. It’s become somewhat of a joke among my close friends “How many books are you working on right now?” My answer is usually four (with a few in waiting). As I approach the release of my next book, What Will My Story Be, my fourth pandemic release, I realized the work has become quite lonely. I know this feeling isn’t unique. Without in person book launches, conferences or connecting with readers, making books is difficult. Many of my books take years to make and releasing them has felt like baking a deflated soufflé.

As I was languishing in my pity party (fully recognizing there are larger problems in the world) it dawned on me that it’s been over 2 years since I’ve made personal art. I’m always drawing on deadline. Books, freelance, or promotional art fills my days. The dissonance I feel is due to the pandemic but also this absence of art for art’s sake. So I decided that a couple times a week I will allow myself to create without purpose. Some I will share and some I will keep for myself.

The above is an hour quick draw. I didn’t know what would come of it. I was thinking about current events and feeling surrounded by storms. And reminding myself that there’s still beauty and love. There’s still a path forward.

I hope you’re all weathering your storms and finding love in these tumultuous times.

We will be fierce

I feel the message of this book now more than ever. My good friend from college, Joe Sampson, is a principal at a bay area elementary school.  Joe posted a video reading I will be fierce and it’s wonderful. It’s great for kids everywhere and honestly, adults too. In addition to the video, I also shared a story time kit to accompany I will be fierce here. It’s been absolutely wonderful to see the educators, librarians and authors come together to support parents who are homeschooling their children.

We also watched his I am not scared video and it brought us comfort.

We’re exploring many new iterations of homeschooling as we adjust to our life, school and work expectations. We’re motivating our kid to get up and ready by using a reward chart. It’s hard when there’s no school to attend. I’m sharing my reward chart here as well.

Things that are working – sidewalk chalk to create alphabet hopscotch and use it to spell words, educational and promotes movement. Nick set up a tent inside our living room for a faux camping movie night. This weekend we plan to hold our first family band practice. We’re also going to set up our dining room as a restaurant (decor, menu, bill!) and give our kid the experience of eating out… in our home.

Every time I read the news my heart sinks… but these small moments of creativity and connection are helping.

Wishing you a safe and restful weekend.

an artist’s life

I want to believe that my thoughts are these cute, encouraging creatures. Ones that push me to create and succeed. But I know they’re a bit more sinister.

My thoughts have been racing as I learn about publishing and being an author. As an illustrator I was protected from the constant reviews, awards and opportunities that are either had or not. The insecurities around other authors. The scrutiny of my work, my words and my choices. I fight myself and my thoughts to keep creating.

Because I want to believe in this vision of an artist’s life. That it’s full of love, color and hope. I want to believe that for our country, our world as well.

So I focus on the things I can control – making good art and good stories. And I live with my cute, sinister thoughts and try not to let them swallow me whole.

updates & news

I’ve been traveling around promoting PASHMINA and unfortunately had to cancel this weekend’s Seattle and Dallas signings due to illness.

I am recouping and back on the road Monday. I hope to see you in Chicago at Anderson’s Bookshop on November 1st. I will also be at the YALSA Symposium in Louisville on November 4th. And to cap it all off, I’ll be at the Miami Book Fair November 17-18. More information about my events here.

And at home in San Francisco, I’m honored to be featured in the Cartoon Art Museum‘s reopening exhibit which will be up until February.

Meanwhile there have been some wonderful press about PASHMINA in Bleeding Cool, The Mary Sue and Electric Literature.

Thank you, always, for your support. I hope to see some of you on the road!

inktober

The free spirit ($45, available)

The adventurer (sold)

Inktober is one of my favorite artist community activities. I will participate as much as I can this year (not daily because I’ll be on the road most of the month). Here’s my first two… it’s been a very long time since I’ve drawn things just for fun. It feels very, very good.

All inktober drawings are available for purchase if you’re the first to contact me. They measure 2.5×3.5 on bristol board made with a combination of brush pen, gold paint, and a dash of colerase pencils. I will update the post when they’re gone!

alaskan adventure

I am off to Alaska on Friday for a mini-con and camping with cartoonists! I’m nervously excited. If you’re in Juneau, please come by!

hourly comics day

Every Feb 1st cartoonist participate in hourly comics day. I couldn’t finish my day because I was preparing for my artist residency at Disney, but I finally finished this week (while battling the flu!) so here it is! Also, hope to see you this weekend at Wonderground Gallery for my second weekend as their artist in residence.
